R U OK? Day – Sunflowers With a Purpose 🌻

At Buds and Bowers, flowers have always been about more than just creating something beautiful.

Flowers can celebrate. They can comfort. They can let somebody know they are loved. And sometimes, they can simply remind someone that there is another person thinking about them.

This R U OK? Day, we wanted our flowers to mean something more.

We have created our R U OK DAY? Sunflower arrangement, with all profits from the sale of this product being donated directly to R U OK?

This is not a partnership, sponsorship or collaboration with R U OK?. It is simply a cause that is very close to our hearts, and something our business has independently chosen to support.

Why This Means Something to Us

For the owner of Buds and Bowers, the message behind R U OK? Day is personal.

Like many people, our boss has experienced difficult periods in life that have tested his mental strength and shown him just how important it is to have people around you who genuinely care enough to ask how you are going.

Those experiences have given us a greater appreciation for mental wellbeing and the importance of looking out for one another.

We often talk about being physically strong, working hard and pushing through difficult times. But mental strength matters just as much.

Being mentally strong doesn't mean pretending that everything is OK.

Sometimes strength is recognising when you're struggling. Sometimes it's having the courage to talk to someone. And sometimes it's simply being there to listen when somebody else needs you.

Why Sunflowers? 🌻

We couldn't think of a more fitting flower than the sunflower.

Bright, warm and uplifting, sunflowers have a way of bringing a little bit of sunshine into a room.

Our R U OK DAY? Sunflower arrangement is our way of encouraging people to send that little bit of sunshine to someone else.

Maybe it's a friend you haven't spoken to for a while.

Maybe it's a family member who has been going through a difficult time.

Maybe it's a colleague who hasn't quite seemed themselves lately.

Or maybe it's someone who appears perfectly fine.

Send the flowers — but more importantly, start the conversation.

Ask them how they're going.

And take the time to genuinely listen to the answer.

We're not doing this as an official partner or collaborator.

We're doing it because we believe in the importance of greater awareness around mental wellbeing, stronger connections between people and having conversations that we sometimes avoid.

Our hope is that every bunch of sunflowers we send does two things: puts a smile on someone's face and reminds someone to check in with a person they care about.

R U OK? Day Is a Reminder — Not Just One Day

R U OK? Day gives us an important reminder to check in with each other, but asking someone if they're OK shouldn't be limited to one day of the year.

We all have people in our lives who may be carrying something we know nothing about.

So pick up the phone.

Send the message.

Catch up for a coffee.

Send some sunflowers.

And ask the question.

“Are you OK?”

Then give them the time and space to answer.
